The AltID# field is a 20 character, indexed, numeric field and may be used to enter items on transactions and to sort items in Lookup Lists and on Reports. AltID# can also contain up to 16 numbers, plus 4 more numbers after the decimal point.
The AltID# field is similar to Product Code except it supports only numbers.
The AltID# field may be used as the secondary Inventory Item Lookup Number after Stock Number.
The AltID# may uniquely identify individual items, or the same AltID# may identify multiple items, and display them in the Which One? Lookup List from which the correct item may be identified by its Description. To ensure that no two items are assigned the same AltID# when entering new AltID#, enable the Unique Indexes parameter for the Inventory AltID# field (Configuration Manager, Setup, Database Settings).
If some Inventory items are not already barcode labeled by the Manufacturer, the AltID# may be used to print barcode formatted labels for just those items using the Keystroke Label Manager. AltID# is numeric only, is usually a short entry number, and can be printed in a small barcode format on price tags.
To scan barcodes representing the AltID# into the Product Code field (the default Line Item Entry Field on transaction screens), the AltID# Alternate Search Field parameter must be enabled (Configuration Manager, Setup, Database Settings).
